Rimac Nevera breaks EV production lap record at Nürburgring

The record-breaking lap was 20 seconds faster than the previous record, Rimac says.

On August 18, the Rimac Nevera broke the previous EV production lap record, beating it by 20 seconds on its first debut at the Nürburgring track. In the shorter track configuration of 20.6 km (12.8 miles), the Nevera set the time of 7:00:928. The record-breaking lap, driven by Croatian racing driver Martin Kodrić, was undertaken using Michelin Cup2R tires and verified by independent timing data, TÜV SÜD and on-board telemetry.

This record is the latest in a list of more than 20 that the Nevera has broken this year, the company says. In April 2023, at the Automotive Testing Papenburg (ATP), Germany, the Rimac Nevera claimed 23 performance records in a single day, including 0-60mph, 0-100mph and 0-186mph.

In July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Nevera once again demonstrated its record-breaking ability. In front of a capacity crowd, the Nevera set a 49.32 second time during the timed Supercar Shootout, making it not just the fastest electric production car to have ever taken on the famous hillclimb, but also the fastest production car to run the hill in 2023. Now, in homage to this record-breaking year, Rimac Automobili says it will produce 12 Nevera Time Attack edition cars.

The latest forecasts from global technology intelligence firm ABI Research found that global EV sales are expected to grow by 21% in 2024 and 19% in 2025. This represents a significant decline from growth rates of 31% in 2023 and 60% in 2022, ABI Research said.

"A shortage of chargers and limited ranges are not to blame for this decline. It's evident from sales data and statements by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) that the EV market is slowing down and failing to meet its targets," Dylan Khoo, an electric vehicles industry analyst, said. "While insufficient charging infrastructure and range limitations are often cited as reasons for this slowdown, they don't fully explain the stagnation, especially considering that these aspects are actually improving rather than deteriorating. Additionally, these explanations fail to consider the region-specific trends driving the EV sector changes."
