Lightyear opens waitlist for second solar-powered EV

The U.S. will be among the first launch regions for the Lightyear 2, and the vehicle will have a price point of under $40k.

During this year’s CES, Dutch solar car company Lightyear announced that customers can now join a waitlist for its second solar-powered EV, the Lightyear 2. Among the first regions for the launch of Lightyear 2 will be the U.S., UK, and EU, and the vehicle will have an estimated price point of below $40,000, the company says.

The company says the Lightyear 2’s integrated layer of solar cells could allow drivers to drive over 500 miles before their next plug charge. Lightyear says the research and development that went into Lightyear 0 will serve as a stepping stone to make Lightyear 2 a more efficient and capable car for more lifestyles. The company says it will be competitively priced and that it will inherit all of the innovations of Lightyear 0.

The Lightyear 2 is still in development and production isn’t expected to begin until 2025.

Mahle has secured two major orders for thermal management modules. One of the contracts is from an established, globally-present vehicle manufacturer, while the second order is from a newer car manufacturer in the Asian region. The total order volume across both projects is just under €1.5 billion (approx. $1.6 billion). Mahle said it combines components previously installed individually into thermal management modules that control the temperature of the battery, vehicle cabin, powertrain and power electronics. The modules can significantly increase the cruising range of an electric car by up to 20% and its charging speed, the company said.
