Amazon, Rivian partnership includes EV and infrastructure

Amazon said its electric vans from Rivian prioritize safety with advanced features while aiming to reduce emissions.

Amazon announced a partnership with Rivian almost three years ago to manufacture 100,000 electric delivery vans to be on the road by 2030. So far, thousands of these custom electric vans have been deployed in over 1,800 U.S. cities to deliver packages for the marketplace. The electric vans already in service have delivered over 260 million packages across the country, Amazon said. The company said it is continuing to expand its electric fleet and charging infrastructure to reduce carbon emissions.

These electric delivery vans are designed with a focus on safety, visibility, driver ergonomics and advanced technology features to support delivery workflows, Amazon said.

As Amazon rapidly scales its electric fleet, the company said it invested $200 million in transportation safety technologies in 2023, including equipping delivery vans with 360-degree visibility, collision avoidance and other driver assistance features.

Amazon said its transition to electric vehicles represents an opportunity for tire dealers and distributors, as the company noted tire manufacturers can partner with Amazon and Rivian to develop specialized tires for these fleet vehicles.

Amazon also announced plans to invest more than 1 billion euros (approx. $1,052,705,000) over the next five years to further electrify and decarbonize its transportation network across Europe. The investment is also intended to drive innovation across the industry and encourage more public charging infrastructure, Amazon said, which will help enable the broader transportation industry to more quickly reduce emissions.
