New CATL battery could allow for passenger plane electrification

The company says its "condensed battery" can store more than twice as much energy as a Tesla Model Y battery.

Chinese technology company CATL has launched a condensed battery with an energy density of up to 500 Wh/kg, which the company says could open up the possibility for the electrification of passenger aircraft. The company says it will achieve mass production of condensed batteries soon.

CATL says it plans to launch an automotive-grade version of its condensed batteries this year.

To address the changes of the high energy density materials resulting from electrochemical reactions, the company says its condensed battery leverages highly conductive biomimetic condensed state electrolytes to construct a micron-level self-adaptive net structure that can adjust the interactive forces among the chains, thus improving the conductive performance of the cells and, in turn, the efficiency of lithium-ion transporting while boosting the stability of the microstructure. CATL adds that its condensed battery also integrates ultra-high energy density cathode materials, new anode materials, separators, and manufacturing processes.

CATL says it is cooperating with partners in the development of electric passenger aircraft and practicing aviation-level standards and testing in accordance with aviation-grade safety and quality requirements. The company says it also plans to launch an automotive-grade version of condensed batteries, which CATL expects to be put into mass production this year.
