Michelin survey reveals top consumer EV concerns

Despite lingering concerns, 82% of EV owners say they are likely to consider buying another EV for their next vehicle.

A recent survey from Michelin shows concerns over the unknown remain an obstacle for many Americans, even for EV owners.

According to the company’s Global EV Outlook 2022 report, sales of EVs could represent 50% of the market by 2030. However, Michelin found that affordability (59%), range anxiety (43%), and a home charging setup (37%) remain top areas of concern for traditional vehicle owners. Still, two-thirds of EV owners agree (67%) driving performance is better with EVs over traditional ICE vehicles, and 82% are likely to consider buying another EV as their next vehicle.

Confidence in tire performance, including the ability to drive in all types of weather with an EV, is a top priority among U.S. drivers (35%). Yet most are unsure of what tire an EV needs (83%).

Other key findings in the report include:

  • Roughly one-quarter (27%) of Americans with traditional vehicles will consider an EV purchase for their next car.
  • 72% of vehicle owners/lessees agree that if they were to take a long road trip, they would not want to be driving an EV, and 82% are concerned about finding a charging station
  • Almost two-thirds (63%) of EV owners agree that less maintenance for EVs is a significant benefit of owning an EV
  • 55% of EV owners are also worried about needing to replace their tires more frequently with EVs
  • Americans who currently only own or lease a traditional gas vehicle, but are likely to purchase an EV next, may not be well-prepared in EV tire care. Only 41% of this population is worried about needing to replace their tires more frequently with an EV.
  • Those aged 18-34 are more likely to own or lease an EV (14%) than those 35-54 (5%) or older (1%).
  • Men (8%) more than women (4%) own or lease an EV.
