Hexagon Purus to supply hydrogen cylinders for next-gen fuel cell electric transit bus

Hexagon Purus will provide its hydrogen storage cylinders for New Flyer’s zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell electric transit bus.

Hexagon Purus has been selected as a supplier of hydrogen cylinders for the fourth year in a row by New Flyer, a subsidiary of NFI Group (NFI). Hexagon Purus said it will continue to provide its Type 4 hydrogen storage cylinders for New Flyer’s next generation, zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell electric transit bus, the Xcelsior Charge FC, which enables a driving range of 370+ miles on a single refueling. The total value of this contract is estimated to be approximately $4 million.

Production of the Type 4 hydrogen storage cylinders will be out of Hexagon Purus’ facility in Westminster, Maryland. Since 2020, Hexagon Purus said it has delivered hydrogen cylinders for well over 100 New Flyer hydrogen fuel cell electric transit buses.

The cylinders will be delivered throughout 2024, Hexagon Purus said.

The latest forecasts from global technology intelligence firm ABI Research found that global EV sales are expected to grow by 21% in 2024 and 19% in 2025. This represents a significant decline from growth rates of 31% in 2023 and 60% in 2022, ABI Research said.

"A shortage of chargers and limited ranges are not to blame for this decline. It's evident from sales data and statements by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) that the EV market is slowing down and failing to meet its targets," Dylan Khoo, an electric vehicles industry analyst, said. "While insufficient charging infrastructure and range limitations are often cited as reasons for this slowdown, they don't fully explain the stagnation, especially considering that these aspects are actually improving rather than deteriorating. Additionally, these explanations fail to consider the region-specific trends driving the EV sector changes."
