Ford reveals all-electric Explorer crossover for Europe

The new electrified offering is being engineered and built in Germany.

Ford has revealed its new all-electric Explorer, an EV that the company says “combines German engineering with striking American style,” for European roads. The Explorer is the first in a wave of new electric vehicles from Ford and the company says it “forges the way for a complete reinvention of the Ford brand in Europe.”

Engineered and built in Germany, the electric Explorer features a SYNC Move 2 “supersized” movable touchscreen and connected infotainment system with audio tailored to the interior, wireless app integration and advanced driver assistance technology. The mid-size crossover has seats for five across two rows.

The vehicle will have the ability to fast charge from 10% to 80% in 25 minutes and will have access to 21,000 charge points in the UK on Ford’s Blue Oval Charging Network. By 2024, Explorer customers will have access to more than 500,000 charging points in 25 countries across Europe, the company says.

The company says the new electric Explorer is the company’s first electric vehicle to be built at scale in the new Ford Cologne EV Campus in Germany. Ford in Europe is committed to offering an all-electric portfolio of passenger vehicles by 2030.

Advanced driver assistance systems include, for the first time on a Ford in Europe, Assisted Lane Change 3 for smoothly and safely changing lanes at the push of an indicator stalk, and Clear Exit Assist 3 which provides warnings of approaching cyclists before opening doors in busy city centers, the company says.

Available in two versions – Select and Premium – the new all-electric Explorer can be ordered in Europe later this year.

Mahle has secured two major orders for thermal management modules. One of the contracts is from an established, globally-present vehicle manufacturer, while the second order is from a newer car manufacturer in the Asian region. The total order volume across both projects is just under €1.5 billion (approx. $1.6 billion). Mahle said it combines components previously installed individually into thermal management modules that control the temperature of the battery, vehicle cabin, powertrain and power electronics. The modules can significantly increase the cruising range of an electric car by up to 20% and its charging speed, the company said.
