Cummins to begin field testing of NHL NTH260 mining hybrid

The hybrid NHL NTH260, a 220 metric-ton payload mining truck, rolled off the production line in January.

Cummins revealed it commissioned its diesel hybrid solution in partnership with a Chinese rigid mining truck manufacturer, North Hauler Joint Stock (NHL). The hybrid NHL NTH260, a 220 metric-ton payload mining truck, rolled off the production line in January and is headed to Baiyun Iron Mine of Baogang Group, China, to begin field testing in March. Cummins said this hybrid system allows the truck engine to be downsized from the previous 2,500HP QSK60 to the current 2,000HP two-stage QSK50.

“We’re excited to share this significant milestone in our journey to advance bridge technologies and provide our mining customers with innovative, practical decarbonization solutions,” Jenny Bush, Cummins Power Systems president said. She joined key leaders from Cummins Power Systems China for the commissioning ceremony in the NHL industrial park in Bautou, China.

According to Cummins, the truck is expected to provide improved fuel efficiency that directly correlates to emissions and GHG reduction. The company said advanced hybrids have the potential to improve fuel efficiency up to 30% dependent on the mine profile and advanced battery technology and controls integration.

“Our partnership with Cummins spans 40 years and advancing the hybridization of our equipment is another demonstration of what we can accomplish together for the benefit of miners globally,” Haiquan Guo, general manager, NHL said. “NHL produces trucks with payload range from 35 to 360 metric tons, with Cummins as the standard engine configuration.”

The social dynamics powering EV adoption

The best predictor of a person driving an EV is someone in their inner circle driving one first.

Imagine a world where electric vehicles (EVs) are as commonplace as smartphones. Not so long ago, this seemed like a distant dream, primarily due to the dreaded “range anxiety.” But today, the landscape is shifting dramatically thanks to a mix of technical advancements and social dynamics.

In 1996, General Motors' EV1 emerged as the first modern-day all-electric vehicle, boasting a modest range of 74 miles – adequate for city driving but limiting for longer trips, especially with public charging stations scarce. For the next 15 years, this narrative was slow to change.

European hybrid vehicle demand is on the rise

JATO Dynamics said the drop in consumer confidence in EVs has sparked a surge in demand for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).

The argument is not whether FCEVs can achieve longer ranges than BEVs, but whether it is needed.
