PPG opens EV battery pack application center in China

The center's modular design will allow independent projects to be carried out concurrently in each application area.

PPG announced it has inaugurated a battery pack application center (BPAC) in Tianjin, China. The company says the $30-million facility features a range of capabilities to test the application of PPG coatings technologies, materials and systems for electric vehicle (EV) battery packs.

The BPAC will include application testing for PPG technologies, including powder coatings, fire protection coatings, dielectric coatings, adhesives and sealants, surface pre-treatment, and e-coat technologies. Its modular design will allow for independent projects to be carried out concurrently in each of the application areas, the company says. This flexibility will enable the development of material and process solutions across the range of current and potential customers, PPG says.

The company is also commercializing its mobile EV charging platform to address challenges related to charging EV fleets.

Yoshi Mobility recently closed its $26 million Series C funding round. The round includes strategic investors General Motors Ventures and Bridgestone Americas, as well as international investors Universal Motors Agencies and Shikra Limited. Launched out of Y Combinator in 2016, the company is also backed by ExxonMobil, DN Automotive, NBA All-Star Kevin Durant, and NFL legend Joe Montana. Yoshi Mobility has raised more than $60 million to date. In addition to scaling its core business, the company said Series C funding enables it to expand three new business lines: preventative maintenance, virtual vehicle inspections and electric vehicle (EV) charging.
