Nikola produced 42 Class 8 Nikola hydrogen fuel cell EVs in 2023

Nikola Corporation produced 42 and wholesaled 35 Class 8 Nikola hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in 2023.

Nikola Corporation, via the HYLA brand, said that in 2023 it produced 42 and wholesaled 35 Class 8 Nikola hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Of the seven trucks produced but not wholesaled, three are being used in an extended field test with a fleet partner; two are in continued validation and engineering; and two are being used for service training/customer demos, Nikola said.

“Our pioneering spirit is what made it possible to wholesale these 35 trucks to our dealers for customers in the U.S. and Canada,” Nikola CEO Steve Girsky said. “We thank our employees, customers and partners for this achievement, and look forward to delivering more trucks in 2024.”

Nikola said its FCEV features a range of up to 500 miles and an estimated fueling time as low as 20 minutes. The company believes its truck is among the longest ranges of all commercially available zero tailpipe emission Class 8 trucks, with applications ranging from drayage and intermodal to metro-regional truckload and less-than-truckload to certain specialized hauling use cases.

The social dynamics powering EV adoption

The best predictor of a person driving an EV is someone in their inner circle driving one first.

Imagine a world where electric vehicles (EVs) are as commonplace as smartphones. Not so long ago, this seemed like a distant dream, primarily due to the dreaded “range anxiety.” But today, the landscape is shifting dramatically thanks to a mix of technical advancements and social dynamics.

In 1996, General Motors' EV1 emerged as the first modern-day all-electric vehicle, boasting a modest range of 74 miles – adequate for city driving but limiting for longer trips, especially with public charging stations scarce. For the next 15 years, this narrative was slow to change.

European hybrid vehicle demand is on the rise

JATO Dynamics said the drop in consumer confidence in EVs has sparked a surge in demand for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).

The argument is not whether FCEVs can achieve longer ranges than BEVs, but whether it is needed.
