Quantron unveils hydrogen-electric truck with 930-mile range

At this year’s IAA Transportation show, Quantron presented a number of long-range, FCEV trucks.

As part of a strategic partnership, Quantron has developed an FCEV Heavy Duty Truck together with Ballard Power Systems. The Quantron QHM FCEV uses a FCmove-XD 120 kW fuel cell newly developed by Ballard as well as an integrated eGen Power 130D E-axle from Allison Transmission. In addition, Quantron offers an optionally available aero package for all QHM FCEV trucks which the company says has been designed to improve the operating range by a further 10%.

The Quantron QHM FCEV 60-2000 and Quantron QHM FCEV 44-2000 will offer exceptionally large tank capacities of up to 116 kg, which are fully integrated in the chassis and positioned behind the cab. This will enable ranges of up to 1500 km (approx. 932 miles) with a single H2 tank filling, the company says.

Under the designation Quantron QHM FCEV 27-1000, this configuration will also be available as a road train version for long-distance heavy-load transports.

According to the latest data from JATO Dynamics for 28 European markets, Europe’s new car market struggled in the first three months of the year as persistently high inflation and interest rates led to a slowdown in demand. This data revealed year-on-year declines in registrations in 23 countries, with only 16 markets experiencing any growth in Q1 2024. In March, registrations totaled 1,377,541 units – a decrease of 2.7% compared to the same month last year. However, registrations in Q1 2024 were up 4.8% on Q1 2023, with 3,380,048 units registered in total in the first three months of the year.

Do hydrogen car range records really matter?

The argument is not whether FCEVs can achieve longer ranges than BEVs, but whether it is needed.
